(A) Nghĩa
của “Thọ”—The meanings of “Feelings”
1) Cho
hay bố thí: Vedana (p & skt)—To give—To confer—To deliver—To hand down.
2) Sống
lâu: Jivita (skt)—To live long—Longevity—Long life—Age.
3)
Feeling or sensation: Vedanta (p & skt)—To receive—To bear—Thọ là pháp tâm
rằng “thọ” tạo nghiệp luân hồi sanh tử—Feeling is knowledge obtained by
the senses, feeling sensation. It is defined as mental reaction to the
object, but in general it means receptivity, or sensation. Feeling is also
a mind which experiences either pleasure, unpleasure or indifference
(pleasant, unpleasant, neither pleasant nor unpleasant). When we meet
attractive objects, we develop pleasurable feelings and attachment which
create karma for us to be reborn in samsara. In the contrary, when we meet
undesirable objects, we develop painful or unpleasurable feelings which
also create karma for us to be reborn in samsara. When we meet objects
that are neither attractive nor unattractive, we develop indifferent
feelings which develop ignorant self-grasping, also create karma for us to
be reborn in samsara. All actions performed by our body, speech and mind
are felt and experienced, Buddhism calls this “Feeling” and the Buddha
confirmed in the Twelve Nidanas that “Feeling” creates karma, either
positive or negative, which causes rebirths in samsara.
(B) “Thọ”
như những đối tượng của thiền tập—“Feelings” as objects of meditation
practices:

tính thọ: To contemplate various kinds of feelings such as pleasant,

that “feelings” only arise when there is contact between the senses.
·
khổ hay thọ trung tính, hậu quả của chúng đều là “khổ”: To contemplate all
of the above to have a better understanding of “feelings.” No matter what
kinds of feelings, pleasant, unpleasant or iddiference, they all lead to

as 500 to 450 B.C. Nowadays, in Ceylon, Burma, China, Vietnam, and other
Buddhist countries, people worship the Buddha’s image in the same fashion
as the Hindus do in India, by offering flowers, food, cloth, incense and
prayers. They also act in the making of an image is the painting of the
eyes, a magical rite as in India. They believe that to do this the image

ngưỡng nầy—A Japanese sect, whose members by dividing day and night into
six periods of worship seek immortality. The Shih School in Japan was
founded in 1276 by I-Bien (1238-1289). He set forth the rule of reciting
the hymns of Shan-Tao six times every day, hence the name ‘time.’ In
theory, he derived his idea from the Lotus Sutra as did Liang-Ran of
Yuzunembutsu, but in practice he followed K’ung-de who invented a popular
dance for the popularization of the Amita-faith. Thus the school has a
totally different feature from the other schools of Amita-pietism. I-Bien
is said to have visited Kumano Shrine in Kii in 1275 where he was inspired
by a holy verse of four lines which he believed to have come from the
deity of the shrine. Each of the first three lines was headed by a numeral
6, 10, and 10,000 and the last line by ‘people,’ altogether making up six
hundred thousand people. At once he made up his mind to save that number
of people by a propagation of the Amita-faith—See Thiện Đạo (2).

Bấy giờ ngài Văn Thù Sư Lợi
hỏi ông Duy Ma Cật rằng: “Bồ Tát thế nào là thông đạt Phật đạo?”—Manjusri
asked Vimalakirti: “How does a Bodhisattva enter the Buddha path?”

hành phi đạo (trái đạo) là thông đạt Phật đạo.”—Vimalakirti replied: “If a
Bodhisattva treads the wrong ways (without discrimination) he enters the
Buddha path.”
·

là Bồ Tát thực hành phi đạo?”—Manjusri asked: “What do you mean by a
Bodhisattva treading the wrong ways?”
·
đầy đủ công đức; đến cảnh sắc và vô sắc giới mà không cho là thù thắng;

and disabled with his own body adorned with the excellent physical marks
(of the Buddha); appears amongst the lower classes but grows the seed of
the Buddha nature with all relevant merits; appears amongst the emaciated
and ugly showing his strong body to the admiration of them all; appears as
an old and ill man but is actually free from all ailments with no fear of
death; appears as having all the necessities of life but always sees into
impermanence and is free from greed; appears to have wives, concubines and
maids but always keeps away from the morass of the five desires; appears
amongst the dull-witted and stammerers to help them win the power of
speech derived from the perfect control of mind; appears amongst heretics
to teach orthodoxy and deliver all living beings; enters all worlds of
